Learning Objectives
After completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
- Explain the natural patterns of insulin secretory defects seen in people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes
- Describe the process of designing individualized insulin treatment regimens in the outpatient setting that balance physiologic needs with patient self-care considerations
- List common obstacles to insulin initiation and treatment stemming from issues such as culture, self-care ability, and regionalized healthcare delivery issues
- Provide effective means of overcoming identified obstacles to insulin initiation and treatment
- Develop and implement office-based systems to facilitate the timely initiation and management of insulin treatment programs
- Provide people using insulin with appropriate educational support to encourage self-management
